A message from the Head of School, Jennifer Cattell

Strong, Resilient, Ambitious, and Kind will be words used in the future to describe our children today. This year has been unique with new challenges and opportunities for us to stretch and grow. Flexible thinking has helped us all become creative problem solvers and allowed our children to embrace change and the new normal without hesitation. We have realized the importance of community and have embraced crossing virtual boundaries to help our remote learners to feel close to their friends and teachers.

Children need to feel safe, valued, and seen. Remote learning has challenged teachers to transform their thinking and adapt their teaching style. Connecting virtually with a child in a way that challenges them, nurtures their spirit and honors their individuality must include parents to be successful. We are so thankful that our parents are sharing their struggles, asking for support and advice, and finding rhythms and routines that work for their family. Through Zoom lunches, group meetings and lessons, our remote learners are able to remain connected to their classmates while also learning the social etiquette of a conversation.

Our goal is to remain connected. Our teachers will continue to keep a “connection” with each of their students and support each student’s social emotional learning at the heart of what they do. We miss our parent involvement and want you to be involved. How can you be involved? Parents, grandparents, and other loved ones can be involved by recording themselves reading books that can be played for the children; listening to children read virtually, setting up a time to have a virtual lunch date with your child and their friends; filming a family celebration and sharing it with your child’s class; hosting virtual playdates for your child and their classmates; and sharing resources with other families on Bloomz.

I am so proud of our community for embracing our new normal with grace, gratitude and a growth mindset. We know there will always be bumps in the road, but together we can get through anything. I will leave you with this quote from Socrates,

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”
