Butterfly Benefit

Each year, Montessori School of Louisville’s staff, families, and friends gather together  and use our collective influence to make a difference in the lives of children and impact our community.

If you are new to MSL, there are several ways you can help us make this a spectacular event.

  • Join us for a community event to expand Montessori education in Louisville. Because we are committed to sharing our vision and inviting new people to join our school, we encourage families to bring guests from outside of our school community.
  • Help secure a sponsor for the event or the project. If your company or a local business you work with are interested in supporting Montessori education and benefiting from branding their organization as a supporter of MSL, please contact us: butterflybenefit@msl-edu.org.
  • Volunteer to help us solicit auction items, secure sponsors, plan the evening, and helping with onsite setup, welcome, registration, and logistics. It is a great way support MSL while being a part of a wonderful event.

Sponsoring organizations will be prominently featured in promotional activities:

  • On our Butterfly Benefit Page- Your logo and link to your website will have year-long presence on our website
  • Acknowledgement on social media as supporter of MSL
  • Organization thanked on the night of the event and in our program
  • Solicit auction items for our live auction and grab bags from your contacts and local businesses when applicable.

Butterfly Benefit History

Maria Montessori made a great contribution to the world in drawing attention to the importance of children as humanity’s future. She had faith that applying her tenants would not only make more meaningful lives for individual children but would contribute to humanity itself:  “If help and salvation are to come, they can only come from the children, for the children are the makers of men… It is the spirit of the child that can determine the course of human progress and lead it perhaps even to a higher form of civilization…We must therefore turn to the child as to the key to the fate of our future life.” 

In 2008, the development committee was searching for a place to hold its annual benefit and recognized an exciting opportunity to form a symbiotic partnership between Muhammad Ali and MSL.  The students have spent time at the Ali center and felt a special connection to the exhibits. One member felt one quote from Dr. Montessori would very much be at home within one of the Center’s exhibits:  “Human beings who have harnessed every kind of physical power, must now tame and tap their own inner power, become masters of themselves…The fundamental freedom, the freedom of the individual is necessary for the evolution of the species for two reasons: one, it gives individuals infinite possibilities for growth and improvement and constitutes the starting point of the human being’s complete development; two, it makes the formation of a society possible for freedom, the basis of human society.”

Muhammad Ali was influential on so many levels, but it is incredible how many parallels there are between the values that guided his life and the values that guide our school, as developed by Dr. Montessori.  To elaborate:


  • Ali: “Rivers, ponds, lakes and streams-they all have different names, but they all contain water. Just as religions do-they all contain truths.”
  • Montessori: “”Our goal is not so much the imparting of knowledge as the unveiling and developing of spiritual energy…Montessori is a spiritual attitude towards mankind and mankind begins with childhood.”


  • Ali: “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
  • Montessori: Montessori believed that, in addition to intellectual achievement, education must help children to develop a sense of themselves and their place in the world. The goal of self-development is rather for service to mankind as well as individual happiness.


  • Ali: “Champions aren’t made in gyms.  Champions are made from something they have deep inside them.  A desire, a dream, a vision.”
  • Montessori: “The role of education is to interest the child profoundly in an external activity to which he will give all of this potential.


  • Ali: “I’ve never let anyone talk me into not believing in myself.”
  • Montessori: “The whole life of the adolescent should be organized in such a way that it will enable…a triumphal entry into social life, not entering it debilitated, isolated, or humiliated, but with head high, sure of himself or herself. Success in life depends on a self-confidence born of a true knowledge of one’s own capacities, combined with the many-sided powers of adaptation…”


  • Ali: “When I meet a new person I don’t see race or religion- I look deeper…we must learn to satisfy our conflicts peacefully and to respect one another.”
  • Montessori: “The ‘absorbent mind’ welcomes everything, puts its hope in everything, accepts poverty equally with wealth, adopts any religion and the prejudices and habits of its countrymen, incarnating all in itself. This is the child!


  • Ali: “All I did was stand up for what I believed.”
  • Montessori: “The child, in fact, once he feels sure of himself, will no longer seek the approval of authority after every step.”

After sharing with Ali Center our strong desire to have our benefit at their center, the first annual “Float Like a Butterfly Benefit” was born. The theme signifies the relevance of Ali’s life and Dr. Montessori’s observation of a fascinating process that takes place during the course of a child’s development, whereby they experience dramatic changes that require different environments to meet their developmental needs. Dr. Montessori metaphorically compares this process to the metamorphosis that a caterpillar undergoes to become a butterfly.
